Where To Start with and More

What Stonemasons Do

What stonemasons do is to shape irregular pieces of rock and make accurate structures. Levels, gauge lines and plumb bob are used by stonemasons in order to set vertical and horizontal alignments of the structure they are building. When they lay out foundations and wall patterns, stonemasons use levels, staked lines, and a straight edge. Other tools that stonemasons use are chisel, hammers, and power grinder in order to make rough or defective spots smooth and to repair cracked or chipped stone, they use a blowtorch.

If a stonemason will work on a monument, then they have to remove parts of the monument from the truck bed that carries them and using hoists, cranes or even skids, they guide it to the foundation. Then, the stonemason will make parts of the structure with a mixture composed of stone.

Stonemasons can be classified into many types.

A quarryman’s job is to work in a quarry splitting rock sheets down their vein in order for stone to be extracted.

A sawyer mason makes these rough chunks of stone and using diamond-tipped saws, shapes them to the required size and shape.

With the required size and shape of the building design in mind, a banker mason further hones the stone. Banker masons ensure that the orientation of the shaped stone in the building is the same as it was oriented in the ground.

The artistic ability of the carver mason is used to create designs and patterns in or from the stone-like figures, animals, or different designs.

The specialization of fixer masons is in fixing stone permanently onto building structure using different forms of epoxy resins and cement. This position is a highly skilled and dangerous one because it requires tolerances that are precise and high altitude work. And in this work, you need to manipulate stone pieces that are very heavy using tackle lift system.

If you need to carve gravestones, statues, or memorials, then you need the services of a memorial mason.

It is usually outdoors that a stonemason works. In this type of work, you will need to exercise great caution and wear hard hats because it is relatively hazardous. In a stonemason’s work, it requires much physical effort and during bad weather, since they work outdoors, contracts are less frequent. But today, stonemasons can work outside whatever the weather condition is because of various advancements in masonry technology.

Because you need to climb scaffolding, use hammers and chisels, and spend the day bending, kneeling, and carrying heavy loads through tough terrain, then we can consider the work of a stonemason to be hard physical labor. With a private contract, a stonemason is required to keep a time schedule. Overtime and weekend work are sometimes necessary to be able to meet deadlines.
